Environment Design – Blockout

Introduction

Now that I know what I am going for I can start making the environment itself, to make sure I get this right I wanted to make a blockout first, just a simple one so I can get a feel for what I am actually going for

Here is a screenshot from the outside, it is quite small, just the starting hall, a side room, a connecting ramp room and then the skull room. You can see some base supports I made for the tunnels as well as a path, the reason the path is there is I actually made the map too small, so it spawned me outside, where I made a path to try get it, then after realizing I can’t I shrunk the player down so it actually fits

Here is the beginning, you can see a boarded up support at the start, I did this so it looks like they tried to block off entrance after they found out what the skull was doing. Then also a small lantern I made from a point light and some cubes, it was purely made so I can see in the dark of the blockout but who knows, I might improve it and use it in the map later on

Then here is the view from the start, you can see the small bridged off section in the hall, I did this to add to it instead of just being a hall as I think it helps break it up from the rest

Then after that to the left is this room with a stone support, I just saw it while exploring Skyrim so thought it was a cool idea I can use, other than that, it doesn’t serve much purpose other than helping to add variety

then here is the ramped room, here you can see a bridge I made with a ramping down, I wanted to made the mine go down to help break it up and feel like an actual mine, as not many are just one layer

Then finally the skull room, here you can see a small block up of the skull and spear which I made glow to try mimic what it will be like as the skull will be glowing in it.

That was the basic blockout, the next was working off that to make it fit the map I had made before:

Firstly I got some log and small wooden support parts to help make the supports fit in for later on, saw no point in putting in temporary when I can get the real thing

Then next you can see I expanded the top part, I have removed the ceilings and will add them after this so I and you can see into the blockout easier

Then I had to redo the bridge ramp room, here you can see me putting in the base from before

And then here is it fully converted to wood as again, thought I might aswell while I’m here

Then expanding the room for the water part and the other side tunnels, you can also see parts where it cuts off at a point, this is because you will not see these in the video. And so I stopped working on parts such as this to focus my work on parts that will be seen

Then here is the ramp with the break, the video will fall down it so hence the ramp stopping there

Then here is what it looks like from below the fall

And then the hall after said fall

Then lastly the skull room at the end of course

Now with the blockout fully set up I can work on making the environment what I want it to off of the base
