Task Brief
For this week we decided to look into several VR and AR Softwares to look at more possibilities for the usages of both I could potentially use.
VR Art Softwares
I didn’t get to try “Open Brush” due to technical difficulties, it took half of our time to even get the software running, then when it was the only person that did remark on how much they disliked using it. It is pretty close to the other two art softwares I will be talking about, which I did try.
Getting used to drawing in VR is definitely hard, especially if you’re used to drawing on a tablet such as myself. I feel it’s more useful for concepting or making experiences without 3D modeling, because you can for example just draw the table how you want it, but you can do the same in most other experience makers, such as “Unity” or “Unreal 5”.
There is also the fact of accessibility, even if I did like these softwares, I don’t have the ability to use them unless I’m in the labs and being supervised, severely limiting my work. For people who can afford it and have access to it, it can be great, but for people such as myself, it just doesn’t have enough upside for me to go out of my way to pay as much as they are for something with marginal uses at best, compared to what I have.
I umbrellaed these together because they are similar, but they are different in some ways. “Open Brush” is Open Source, being made by the community to whatever liking they or you want.
“Gravity Sketch” is more for creating products than experiences, which is useful in industry given how much faster and easier it can be when utilized properly, given you can put your image in your head down easier when you can practically touch it in such a software.
“ShapesXR” steps back and is actually accessible without a VR Headset, making it great for collaboration which it endorses, with multiple people able to work in the same experience at once. Due to this it is definitely my favorite, getting to work with others when needed and removing the technology wall for those that can’t climb it.
When using the other two, and when asking about the first, we all remarked how similar they are to control, which is both bad and good, it means they kind of blend into one, unable to break apart from each others except for the major differences, such as the collaboration aspect of “ShapesXR”.
Work Made in Art Softwares
ShapesXR:
We weren’t given much guidance, told to experiment together, but because of technical issues, we ended up just testing the softwares, for example on “ShapesXR” I just created a small park scene, using the brush and shape tool. Then someone else added the bucket and laptop, I couldn’t figure out how to move around which is why it’s all bunched together.

I had fun testing “ShapesXR” out, we were told to plan off eachother but given the technical difficulties and limited time frame we just didn’t have enough time, making this the only scene that stays on its theme.
Gravity Sketch:
I got this second to last, the people before me making a potion and a snowman, not knowing the theme, just wanting to test the software. From this I decided to do the same, making art from a game series I like, they look silly but it was fun to use and create, I feel like this was more for enjoyment than practicality, I don’t see myself actually using this kind of software for work purposes.

Lastly was “Open Brush” but I never got to use it, and it was just this but worse given the technical difficulties that came when trying to use it, for those reasons I see no reason to show what little was made.
Conculsion
It was fun to mess around with these softwares, but because of technical limitations and how suddenly it was given to us with the timeframe, not much was done other than just that, messing around. I see the draw but much prefer what I already use because they lack alot of the limitations without losing much functionality. Because of that, this was interesting but I plan on not touching these softwares past that.
